Install & help
Each device comes as a folder with the device (an .amxd file), its presets and a one-page manual. You'll need Ableton Live 12 Suite, or Live 12 Standard with Max for Live, on Mac or Windows. Max for Live comes with Live Suite; Live Standard owners can add it with the Max for Live add-on.
1. Download it
After you buy, Gumroad emails you a download link. It's also in your Gumroad library at any time, so you can download it again whenever you need to. Unzip it if it comes zipped.
2. Put it somewhere it will stay
Live remembers where a device file lives, so don't leave it in Downloads. Put the whole folder in your Live User Library:
- Mac: Music/Ableton/User Library/Presets/MIDI Effects/Max MIDI Effect/
- Windows: Documents\Ableton\User Library\Presets\MIDI Effects\Max MIDI Effect\
If you've moved your User Library, Live shows where it is in Settings, under Library.
Kepler comes as two devices. The MIDI effect goes in the folder above. The MIDI Generator goes in User Library/MIDI Tools/Max Generators/, and then shows up in a clip's Generate tab.
3. Drop it on a track
- In Live's browser, open User Library (or Max for Live, MIDI Effects) and find the device.
- Drag it onto a MIDI track, before the instrument, so the notes it plays reach the instrument.
- Press play. Kanoid and Kepler follow Live's transport. Kradle plays when you lift a ball or press Kick.
You can also drag the .amxd straight from Finder or Explorer onto a track. Move it to its final home first, though, so your sets can find it later.
If something's not right
- Live says Max for Live isn't available: you're on Live Intro or Lite, or Standard without the add-on.
- No sound: the device needs to be on a MIDI track with an instrument after it. Check the device's notes switch is on.
- A set says a device is missing: the file was moved or deleted. Put it back in your User Library and let Live search for it.
- Mappings: click Map on the device, then click any control in Live. X clears it. Mappings are saved with your set.
